Germany reinventing Christmas:
An example to follow
In Germany we have a long tradition for Christmas dating well back for centuries. The Christmas tree is often seen as part of our cultural heritage and even sometimes considered as a „german invention“. No matter if this is true or not, Christmas is for many germans the most important cultural event to gather with their families throughout the year. As such it takes a central part in our calender. Aside from the social aspects it is the occasion for many to let the year pass in review.
As is the case everywhere in the world, the year 2020 is a gamechanger – last but not least for Christmas. It is for good reason that around here we are wonderng how the situation will unfold within the days to come. However it is important to note the difference:
We don’t want to worry: We want to care and do the right things!
#WeSaveChristmas is a reminder for all of us to stay patient and to avoid all unnecessary contacts throughout the Christmas-period. There is no way we would like to spoil one of the greatest days of the year. We want to enjoy seeing our loved ones -including the elderly- wihout putting anybody at risk. We now have a vaccine at hand that will be supplied shortly. It would be a pitty if we would spoil our efforts in the very last moments.

„Please, do stay at home.“

„Germany is one of the few countries worldwide, in which the ethical aspects are explicitly and transparently considered and are part of the (national) vaccination strategie.“

Bavarian’s Prime Minister Söder added: „Corona got out of control. We will no longer do things by half. Corona is a catastrophe.“ He announced the new motto: „All or nothing“. According to him we now have to decide consequently and not halfhartedly. „It’s now time for a common approach – we must all join.“
At the same time reminded us, that the vaccines are now within reach. He thanked the general public that the strategie of vaccination is widely supported by the general public. This also includes the financial side.
He insisted: „Protection of health is the highest priority. We must lock down public live to a strict minimum….A total lockdown is fair, because it concerns everybody.“ He explicitly thanked Jens Spahn (health minister) for the good cooperation with the bavarian authorities.

Of course we are far from being best with keeping numbers low. Taiwan and some other Asian countries succeed much better than we did in keeping numbers low. Still we hope it was worth sharing at least some of our ideas with the rest of the world, because:
- We learn from each other
- It’s good for all of us
- We can only succeed with this together
- We learned managing the situation by every-day learning so far
- We can encourage each other to continue
- We’ve gotten some good press
- We all love our Christmas tradition, even if the Christmas tree should not be a german invention 😉
- We hope we are fair
- We’ve gotten some good press so far
- We are sitting in the same boat
- We are united in the same cause
- We all share the common perspecive, that with the vaccines at hand it’ll soon be over
Coronavirus: Merkel urges for stricter lockdown
Better than it’s neighbours.
„It also helps that Angela Merkel has a doctorate in quantum chemistry and heads a country that treats scientists, like the Berlin-based virologist and podcaster Christian Drosten, like superstars.“
How Germany got coronavirus straight
„Combined with its six-week shutdown, Germany’s “track and trace” system has been instrumental in stalling the spread of Covid-19 and preventing it from overwhelming the health system.“
Today Global Leadership comes from Berlin
„People love to hate Germany—but the country is doing far more than most nations to help its European neighbors fight the coronavirus.“
